Vale continue sparkling form

Vale of Girvan’s excellent run of form continued on Saturday when they steamrollered Caledonian 8-0 at Victory Park.

Darren Mitchell started the rout after ten minutes and Vale were two-up two minutes later when Bob Ashworh’s corner was met by the head of captain Steven McCluskey to head home from eight yards.

The goal of the game came on the half-hour mark when David McVittie waltzed round defenders before rounding the Symington keeper to make it three.

Five minutes later, the game was sealed after Darren Mitchell was brought down just outside the 18-yard box and John McMillan coolly slotted his free kick into the back of the net.

The script didn’t alter in the second half and Vale scored almost immediately after the interval when McVittie’s chip from 18 yards went into the back of the net.

It was all one-way traffic now, although manager Gordon McIlwraith still wasn’t happy as he barked orders at his players, sending his blood pressure perilously high.

Kenny Gilchrest pace took him past three men before he fired into the net to make it six after an hour. And number seven followed shortly when Gilchrest’s corner met the head of substitute Cammy Bone.

Fittingly, it was man of the match Darren Mitchell who rounded off the scoring with five minutes remaining.

McIlwraith told the Carrick Gazette: “We had control of the whole 90 minutes today and it is always nice to get another three points under our belts.

I thought Darren Mitchell was outstanding today as we look forward to a midweek game against Symington again.”

That game takes place tonight with a 6.30 kick-off.
